Technomathematics: New course of study for the digitalized world of work

The digitalization of the world of work is also opening up new career prospects for mathematicians. The University of Kassel is responding to this with a new Technomathematics degree program that combines computer science and engineering with mathematics. The bachelor's degree differs from degree programs with similar names in one important respect.

The study program Technomathematics will start in the upcoming winter semester; it is not limited in admission, an enrollment is possible now under www.uni-kassel.de/go/b_technomathematik  possible. Students take modules in mathematics and computer science as well as in one of four possible application majors: Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Environmental Engineering.

"In the digitalized world, the combination of mathematical expertise with basic technical engineering and computer science knowledge offers the best prerequisites for a career in broad areas of industry, especially in software or research and development departments," says Prof. Dr. Werner Seiler, who is responsible for the program. "We are pleased that the new program will be launched in the winter semester."

Study programs called technomathematics have been created at about a dozen universities in recent years. However, the bachelor's program at the University of Kassel is the only one that offers combination options with environmental engineering, thus providing a strong environmental focus.

Prof. Dr. René Matzdorf, Vice President for Studies and Teaching, explains: "The broad range of subjects at our university also allows us to interface with our range of courses. Four departments are collaborating on this new program. Graduates can benefit from this in their scientific studies, but also in their professional careers."

The University of Kassel is also introducing a master's program in technomathematics, which builds on the new bachelor's degree. In addition, the University of Kassel will continue to offer a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in mathematics, which will again focus more on mathematical modules in the future; the master's degree in mathematics will become an English-language program.
