Postdoc-UNIKAT-Fellowship brings ideas into practice - apply now

Ron-Hendrik Hechelmann is working on optimizing the operation of refrigeration machines with the help of a microcontroller. He is being funded for one year through the Postdoc UNIKAT Fellowship to develop a business concept and the microcontroller and to market the optimization as a service.

The fellowship promotes the implementation of the application idea, but also supports postdoc Hechelmann to further develop his personal skills. "In order to clarify the marketability of his product and to get into conversation with potential funders and customers, Hechelmann, as a scientist, has to explain the highly complex topic of refrigeration machines and microcontrollers in a way that is understandable and brief for people outside the field. The opportunity to participate in the Communication School in September came at an ideal time for him," explains Gabriele Hennemuth from the University of Kassel's start-up consultancy. Hechelmann will test the skills he learned during the week-long advanced training on science communication at Science Night on November 17, 2020. "For me, it's ideal that at Science Night I can practice the tools I've learned - such as creating a video on a topic and storytelling in science - before I approach potentially important business partners as part of my fellowship project. Corona restrictions make the ability to present research processes and results online or via video even more important, as face-to-face meetings with clients and funders are almost impossible."

The University of Kassel announces the Postdoctoral UNIKAT Fellowship, sponsored by B. Braun Melsungen AG, for outstanding applied research to advance research findings. The fellowship supports young scientists in the further development of their research results for a period of 12 months after completing their doctorate. The results should be the basis for business start-ups, marketing activities or cooperations with companies and organizations.

Applications for the Postdoc-UNIKAT-Fellowship starting April 1, 2021 are still possible until November 30, 2020. Postdocs who have completed their doctorate by April 1, 2021 and whose doctorate was completed no longer than 24 months ago are eligible to apply. A prerequisite for application is a consultation at the University of Kassel's start-up advisory service.
