Research project digitizes logistics for mechanical and plant engineering

In mechanical and plant engineering, the punctual commissioning of products is crucial. Due to a lack of data, industry often relies on estimates or plans for schedule buffers when it comes to logistics in construction site operations. A research project involving the University of Kassel is working on more accurate solutions.

The project is entitled "dataject.log - Development of a semantic model to describe a digital shadow of logistics processes in mechanical and plant engineering for use in project management". The aimis to develop a method for making the so-called digital shadow visible for logistics processes in mechanical and plant engineering. "This is a kind of digital footprint left by the user. While we already record data for production digitally and it is available in the form of Digital Shadows, it is missing for logistics. Feedback - if any - is done manually, analogously or as a follow-up," explains coordinator Prof. Dr. Sigrid Wenzel. Small and medium-sized companies should be able to collect data in a targeted manner and use it sustainably for planning and controlling projects. Planning efforts could be reduced, risks minimized and transparency ensured.

To test the practicality of the results, the team is supported by a committee made up of members from industry, research associations and federations. The first meeting of the committee already took place on July 21, 2021, with representatives from BEUMER Group GmbH & Co. KG, CONTACT Software GmbH, io-consultants GmbH & Co. KG, SimPlan AG, TransMIT Gesellschaft für Technologietransfer mbH, Venjakob Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG, and Zukunftsallianz Maschinenbau e.V.

The research project is being implemented jointly by the Department of Production Organization and Factory Planning at the University of Kassel and the Department of Business Informatics at the Institute of Management and Information at the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau. The project will run until February 2023.

The project is funded by the Industrial Cooperative Research (IGF) 21755 BG project of the German Logistics Association (BVL) via the Alliance of Industrial Research (AiF) as part of the program to promote IGF from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).
