Humans and AI systems: project group presents research results

Alexa, Cortana or Siri: Many people have already interacted with an artificial intelligence in their everyday lives. But how exactly do AIs work, how transparent are they built, and to what extent do they affect communication? These and other questions were investigated in the IMPACT project with participation from Kassel. On March 6 and 7, the project team will present its central research results at a final conference.

Over a period of four years, the researchers examined the use of AI in everyday life by three groups of people from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives: children, adults and senior citizens. The project, which involved researchers from the fields of law, ethics, computer science and social psychology, was funded by the Volkswagen Foundation with 1.5 million euros.

"We studied the use of artificial intelligence across the lifespan and from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives. In this way, we were able to gain a comprehensive picture of the usage behavior and effects of AI systems. Only in an interdisciplinary collaborative project like IMPACT can such extensive research work be done," says Prof. Dr. Alexander Roßnagel, Head of the Department of Public Law at the University of Kassel. Also Priv.-Doz. Dr. Christian Geminn, research associate in the same department, was also involved in the research.

IMPACT stands for "Implications of conversing with intelligent machines in everyday life for people's beliefs about algorithms, their communication behavior and their relationship building." In addition to the University of Kassel, the universities of Bielefeld, Duisburg-Essen and the Protestant University of Applied Sciences in Nuremberg were also involved.

At the end of the research project, the participants will present their results at a conference from March 6 to 7 at the AXICA Congress Center in Berlin. The program also includes lectures by top international researchers. A panel discussion will also address legal and ethical concerns and look at the implications of new technologies such as ChatGPT.
