Ballstars: Ball game project with MT Melsungen to be expanded

The "ballstars" are going into extension: The successful project, in which Kassel sports scientists learn ball games with elementary school children, will be continued for at least four years. In the future, even more schools will be able to participate.

Prof. Dr. Volker Scheid, scientific director of the ballstars project, drew a positive balance of the first years during a network meeting last weekend. Since 2015, students from the Sports Institute - who are also trained exercise instructors - have been teaching ball games to children in the first four grades according to an integrative concept. The sports scientists collect data on how much the children benefit from the additional sports lessons and develop suitable forms of play. Currently, a total of 12 elementary schools are involved in the cooperative project.

Around 450 children from the Kassel region have so far taken part in the ballstars AGs and practiced ball games in additional sports lessons in preparation for the major sports games of basketball, handball and soccer. "We sports scientists primarily register an improvement in the children's motor skills and understanding of the game," Scheid explained. "But the elementary school students also visibly improve their social skills through sports." The program is aimed at children who are inexperienced in sports as well as talented ones.

An initial sports science result of the program is the publication "ballstars. Teaching target shooting games in an integrative way at elementary school age," which will be published soon. In the future, the sports scientists will be able to draw even better conclusions about the development of the children with larger data sets; in addition, they want to follow the sports careers of the boys and girls in the long term and offer teachers and exercise instructors an opportunity for further training. To this end, a collaboration with the Central Training Facility for Sports Teachers ZFS is planned. As part of the continuing education concept, the project is to be expanded to other elementary schools. The construction of the new TASK sports hall, for which the topping-out ceremony was recently held, will also make it possible to set up special support groups.

"ballstars" is a joint project of the Institute for Sports and Sports Science at Kassel University and MT Melsungen. It is supported by WINGAS, Volkswagen AG and BKK Wirtschaft und Finanzen. The Institute for Sports and Sports Science at the University of Kassel trains teachers for physical education and often achieved good results in CHE rankings.
