Hannes Eichler receives North Hesse Construction Industry Award for outstanding master's thesis

Glass is very popular in construction and is used for windows or facades. Increasingly, it is now also being used for structural purposes. However, the question arises as to how this is best accomplished. In his master's thesis, Hannes Eichler is investigating the connection between glass and ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) in composite flexural beams. A special construction method enables the planning engineers to design glass components in a safe and calculable way, even independently of the glass strength, which is susceptible to scattering. In this way, glass panels can also be used for structural purposes, enabling a slim, economical supporting structure. This contributes to a resource-saving construction method.

The jury found the award winner's results very convincing and valuable. The work combines scientific standards with direct practical relevance in an outstanding way and demonstrates in an exemplary manner the close link between university research and teaching. It shows that the profession of civil engineering has a high social relevance due to its importance for the achievement of current construction and environmental policy goals. The master's thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ekkehard Fehling (Department of Solid Construction) and Dipl.-Ing. M.Sc. Roland Vollmar (lecturer at the Department of Solid Construction).

The ceremony took place on January 28, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. in the university's Gießhaus. Prof. Bernhard Middendorf, Dean of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, moderated and led through the evening. The presentation of the sponsorship award was taken over by the two board members of ASK Thilko Gerke and Dr. Burkhard Siebert.
