Prof. Dr. René Matzdorf re-elected as Vice President for Studies and Teaching

During his tenure, Prof. Matzdorf has, among other things, driven forward the quality assurance of degree programs and the digitization of teaching at the university in northern Hesse. Since the end of 2018, for example, the University of Kassel has been involved in the joint project "Digitally Supported Teaching and Learning in Hesse," which is developing didactic and technical prerequisites for the permanent use of new technologies. The experimental physicist has held the post for three years and is responsible, among other areas, for studies and teaching, teacher training and evaluation of university services. The new term of office is also three years.

A particular concern of Matzdorf's is to take greater account of students' increasingly individual and diverse life courses. For example, the "Teaching Mission Statement," which he was instrumental in designing and which the university recently adopted, opens up scope for studying at different speeds.

Matzdorf expressed his gratitude for the confidence of the Extended Senate. "The University of Kassel is extremely innovative when it comes to teaching, as demonstrated not least by 15 university awards for excellence in teaching that we have received in ten tender years to date. I look forward to continuing our work on the development of our university in this fertile environment," said Matzdorf.

The university's president, Prof. Dr. Reiner Finkeldey, praised Matzdorf as a high-profile expert in the further development of study programs and teaching offerings: "He has rendered outstanding service not only with the teaching mission statement, which will shape our day-to-day teaching in the medium term. With his level-headed, communicative and fact-oriented manner, he is moving the university forward."

Prof. Dr. René Matzdorf (55) was born in Kassel and studied physics at the local university, where he also received his doctorate and habilitation in 1997. In 2000, he took up a professorship at the University of Würzburg. Since 2003, he has headed the Surface Physics Department at the University of Kassel.
