The research study by Isabell Diermann, Dr. Silja Kotte, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Kathrin Rosing and Prof. Dr. Heidi Möller entitled "Coaching Entrepreneurs: Characteristics and Functions of Entrepreneurial Coaching throughout the Entrepreneurial Process" investigates which characteristics make up the consulting format "founder coaching". To this end, a total of 67 interviews were conducted throughout Germany with founder coaches as well as with coached founders in order to capture the perspective of the actors involved in practice. The researchers were able to find out that coaching for founders differs from classic business coaching.

Founder coaches fulfill functions for the coachees as network brokers, knowledge brokers and implementation supporters that go beyond the "classic" functions in business coaching, including coach as supporter, sparring partner or professionalizer. In addition, the special work requirements of founders as well as the institutional context in which founder coaching is embedded play a role in the effectiveness of the consulting.
