Students at the Kunsthochschule design posters for the Kassel Child Protection Agency

Just in time for World Children's Day (20.09.18), posters by students of the Kunsthochschule Kassel were ceremoniously unveiled at the Rothenditmold Family Center. On the initiative of the Deutscher Kinderschutzbund, Ortsverband Kassel e.V. (Volkhardt Strutwolf, former board member), the project was accompanied and implemented by the Studio Redaktionelles Gestalten (Prof. Gabriele Franziska Götz and Milena Albiez, artistic staff of the Kunsthochschule Kassel) and the department Service Learning - Lernen durch gesellschaftliches Engagement (Dr. Imke-Marie Badur, University of Kassel).

The posters were designed by four students of the Kunsthochschule Kassel.

On behalf of the Kassel Child Protection Association, the students designed 1 poster each on the topic of children's rights for 11 social institutions from Rothenditmold. The respective children's right had been chosen by the institution itself, depending on what was particularly close to their hearts. These institutions are united in the association (AKERo) "Active for parents and children in Rothenditmold". The posters were designed by four students from the editorial design program at the Kassel Art Academy: Carolin Ludwig, Frauke Rohenkohl, Jan Mensen and Lea Rist. They developed 11 different poster motifs with a serial character and recognition value. "Our assignment was to create posters to make children's rights visible in the district of Rothenditmold (Kassel). The posters should ensure more attention and perception of children's rights," says Carolin Ludwig.

The cooperation partners were involved in the design. In 9 institutions, the students conducted workshops that dealt with the respective children's rights. For example, the children from one facility used their own interpretation of the topic "Children have the right to a safe home" in a creative task. At the end of the workshop, they made their own houses out of shoeboxes. "We further processed the workshop results in the team and used them somewhat 'alienated' as design elements for the posters," Ludwig explains.

The slogans on the posters cover many areas of awareness of children's rights. For example, that children have a right to: "Protection in war and on the run," "To know what's going on in the world," "Safe home," "Healthy food" and "Protection from violence." The posters hang on the respective participating facilities, mostly directly on the facades of the buildings.

We are pleased that we are using the posters to create awareness of children's rights in our everyday lives. We hope that our work will stick well in people's minds to strengthen children's rights," sums up Prof. Götz.
