Award of the Poster Prize of the University Society

Scientific posters on regenerative potato cultivation by Stephan Junge and on the reintroduction of Arnica in the Rhön by Nils Stanik were awarded the Poster Prize of the Universitätsgesellschaft Kassel e.V. last Thursday during the Campusfest of the University of Kassel. The prizes were presented by Mrs. Sabine Anselmann-Seydler, board member of the UGK (Universitätsgesellschaft Kassel).

Stephan Junge's work is dedicated to the burning issue for the earth of humus depletion by agricultural practices and is developing the regenerative potato cultivation system in collaboration with several partners from science and practice. As an excellent photographer and drone flyer, he also makes an invaluable contribution to the visualization of the field research work of the Department of Ecological Plant Protection.

In his research, Nils Stanik observes that despite intensive management measures, the ancient medicinal plant arnica is steadily declining in mountain meadows and its endangerment is increasing. With the investigation he and his colleagues could show that current occurrences of Arnica at their sites in the Rhön differ in individual characteristic microstructures. In addition, some positive and negative species combinations associated with their occurrence or absence could be identified. The findings can help nature conservation practice to identify suitable vegetation patterns where reintroductions of Arnica can be made or its growing conditions can be specifically promoted.

Stephan Junge has been pursuing the topic of regenerative potato cultivation since his bachelor's and master's theses, for which he has already received the sponsorship award from the Association for the Promotion of the Potato Industry. He was a doctoral scholar at the University of Kassel and is supervised by Prof. Dr. Maria Finckh.

Nils Stanik studied landscape planning with a specialization in landscape ecology in Kassel and is doing his doctorate in landscape ecology at the University of Kassel under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gert Rosenthal.

The poster award has been sponsored by the Universitätsgesellschaft Kassel e.V. since 1999. In 2018, 28 posters were submitted for the competition, six of them from the humanities and social sciences and 22 from the technical and natural sciences. The two prizes are endowed with 400 euros each.
