Wilfried Müller Chairman of the University Council of the University of Kassel

Müller has been a member of the University Council since October 2012. Born in North Frisia, he studied chemistry and philosophy in Kiel and education and sociology in Hamburg. In 1974, he received his doctorate there with a thesis on the education and careers of natural scientists and engineers. In 1976, he became an assistant professor, in 1979 a professor, in 1997 a vice-rector and in 2002 a rector of the University of Bremen. Müller looks back on a very successful tenure until his retirement in 2012.

His predecessor, Prof. Dr. Georg Teutsch, had been a member of the University Council of the University of Kassel since 2005 and its chairman since 2009. His membership of the University Council will end by rotation at the end of the year. Teutsch is scientific director of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig.

Prof. Dr. Reiner Finkeldey, President of the University of Kassel, thanked Teutsch for his commitment: "As a member of the University Council and as its Chairman, you have been a constructively critical but always sympathetic advisor to the University for many years. We owe you valuable impulses, especially in profile building and research orientation, but also in the promotion of young scientists. Since you are an environmental researcher and scientific director of a renowned non-university research institute, there will certainly always be common points of contact, but I would be pleased if you also remained personally connected to us and your advice does not end with today."

At the same time, Finkeldey thanked Müller for taking on the post: "Your many years of experience in higher education policy will be invaluable to us in positioning ourselves nationally and internationally. We know in you a smart, experienced and academically versatile companion at our side."

The University Council of the University of Kassel has eight members as of the beginning of 2017. With Dr. Annette Beller and Prof. Dr. Uwe Schneidewind, two new members recently joined; they were warmly welcomed into the circle today.

The tasks of the University Council are governed by the Hessian Higher Education Act. According to this, it accompanies the university in its development, articulates the expectations that exist in the professional world and promotes the use of scientific knowledge and artistic achievements. The University Council has a right of initiative on fundamental matters of the university and must approve development planning. It makes recommendations on course planning, evaluation procedures, target agreements, knowledge transfer, as well as on task-oriented and efficient administration and use of funds. It gives its opinion on the university's basic regulations, accountability reports, budget planning, the establishment and discontinuation of study programs, and the division of the university into departments. It also participates in the election of members of the Presidential Board. The university council consists of up to ten members from business, professional practice and the fields of science and art. The members are appointed by the HMWK and half are nominated by the university and half by the ministry.
