Project presentation - "Burchard's Decree Digital

In 2020, the research project 'Burchard's Decree Digital' began with the aim of producing the first critical edition of the decree of Bishop Burchard of Worms, which is considered one of the most influential collections of canon law of the 11th and 12th centuries. The 20-book work was up-to-date and practical, which also explains its distribution in over 80 manuscripts. Until now, an edition of the work that met modern standards was considered an almost impossible task.

With the help of digital techniques, the project, which is funded by the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz, is tackling this task with workstations at the Universities of Erlangen, Kassel and Mainz as well as numerous cooperation partners. At the same time, the project, which is scheduled to run for 18 years, is aimed at the multi-perspective analysis of sources, editing, reception and cultural-historical significance of the work of the Bishop of Worms.
