Series of events "Living in times of multiple crisis!?" - Speakers from Flassbeck to Weselsky

At the University of Kassel, the new semester will see the launch of the public lecture series "Living in Times of Multiple Crisis - What Impact Does the Financial and Euro Crisis Have on Politics, Economics and Society?" Guest speakers include Heiner Flassbeck, Claus Weselsky and representatives of the Spanish party Podemos, founded in 2014.

The weekly event is organized by students and will take place every Tuesday from October 20, 2015 to February 9, 2016 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Lecture Hall 5 of the new Campus Center (Moritzstr. 18). Speakers from politics, academia and civil society will provide insights into current crisis dynamics and answer questions from the audience. Among others, Heiner Flassbeck, former chief economist at the UN Organization for World Trade and Development (UNCTAD), will speak about Germany's role in the euro crisis on October 27, 2015. The kick-off event on October 20, 2015 will start with a résumé on the impact of the financial crisis for the Eurozone since 2007.

In addition to presentations on the financial and euro crisis, the crisis of the European border regime and perspectives for a socio-ecological transformation, a series of stimulating and controversial discussions are planned: On December 1, 2015, Gabriel Glöckler from the European Central Bank and Lisa Mittendrein from Attac Austria will devote themselves to the European policy pursued by the Troika during the Greek crisis. On January 19, 2016, Claus Weselsky from the German Train Drivers' Union (GDL) and Dr. Alexander Gallas from the University of Kassel will discuss current challenges that established trade unions will have to face in the future.

"With this lecture series, we want to stimulate critical reflection on the interrelationships of current crisis processes and create a space in which perspectives on future social development can be debated," explains Dr. Joscha Wullweber, research associate in the "Globalization and Politics" department and co-organizer.

The event is aimed at students and teachers from all departments as well as interested guests from Kassel and the surrounding area. It has been organized in cooperation with the Heinrich Böll Foundation Hesse and with the kind support of the GEW, the Böckler Scholarship Group and the Asta of the University of Kassel.
