Two joint doctoral programs of the University of Kassel and the University of Applied Sciences Fulda on health professions and nutrition

The University of Kassel and the University of Applied Sciences Fulda are expanding their cooperation in the promotion of young researchers. Following the launch of a joint doctoral program on social human rights last year, they are now establishing two further cooperative doctoral programs on health professions in global change and on the food industry. They started started work on April 1.

The focus of the program "Health Professions in Global Change" is on the changes in training for health professions that result from migration, such as dealing with patients from other cultures as well as one's own professional activities at home and abroad. The second doctoral program, "Food Industry and Technology," focuses on sustainability along the food chain. One area of research is food safety or food risk in the age of genetic engineering. For example, the new CRISPR/Cas technology can be used to cut and modify DNA, opening up technical possibilities for food production as well. Also of research interest, however, are lifestyles and dietary habits in Germany, as well as how to secure the nutritional basis in rural communities with water shortages in other regions of the world.

"The joint research and promotion of young scientists within the framework of the two doctoral colleges on health care and nutritional economics promotes close cooperation between the disciplines involved in Fulda and Kassel. Both universities benefit from the exchange of knowledge in these research fields. It is a project that further strengthens the binding structures for results- and quality-oriented cooperation in doctoral supervision," explains Prof. Dr. Ute Clement, Vice President of the University of Kassel.

"We are pleased that with the two new doctoral colleges, we can now offer targeted graduates the opportunity to pursue a doctorate in an institutionalized setting in two additional fields that are important for our university," said Prof. Dr. Steven Lambeck, Vice President for Research and Development at Fulda University of Applied Sciences. "The long-standing cooperation between the departments of Fulda University of Applied Sciences and the University of Kassel involved in the doctoral programs will thus certainly be further deepened and intensified in the coming years."

In total, it is planned to complete ten joint doctorates in the period from April 2017 to March 2020. To this end, six doctoral positions (approx. 540,000 euros) and four doctoral scholarships (approx. 172,000 euros) will be financed from the funds of the Innovation and Structural Development Budget of the State of Hesse. Coordination positions and material resources for the research projects will be provided by the universities in the amount of 260,000 euros.
