Produce bioplastics at home

A team from the University of Kassel offers bioplastics experiment kits for home use - free of charge and without risk. The aim is to strengthen understanding of the bioeconomy in the region.

The bioeconomy is a way of doing business that is not based on the consumption of fossil resources, but is sustainable and biobased. A frequently cited example of future possibilities is energy generation from algae, but there is also a lot of potential in the conversion to biologically based plastics.

The CoLab team, led by Kassel Master's student Özge Efendi and former student Tobias Hofmann, recently raised 10,000 euros from the Science in Dialogue (WiD) initiative for public outreach projects related to the bioeconomy. However, due to Corona restrictions, none of the planned events will take place until further notice.

"We had to change our plans and will now provide experiment boxes free of charge instead of events," explains Efendi. "If people can't come to us, we'll just come to their homes - contactless. We are starting with a run of 75 boxes that people can order online. The boxes contain materials and instructions to make bioplastics themselves. We want to encourage independent research and invite people to share their results via social media platforms."

The Science in Dialogue (WiD) initiative is dedicating the 2020 Year of Science to the bioeconomy. In a competition, 14 other initiatives were awarded prizes in addition to the Kassel project.
