Hessian university members are countering the crisis with innovative solutions and business ideas. 56 start-up projects, more than in any previous round, applied for the fifth round of the Hessen Ideen Stipendium. In a two-stage process, 17 start-up ideas from 7 Hessian universities were selected to begin the six-month funding program on July 1. A total of 29 will receive funding. From the University of Kassel, 5 teams are included.

"The enormous increase in interest in the Hessen Ideen Stipendium shows the innovative power of the Hessian university landscape. The scholarship teams tackle problems they have encountered in the scientific field or in their everyday life at the university and offer solutions for them - very often these are also resource-saving and sustainable," said Science Minister Angela Dorn. "Especially in times of the corona pandemic, it is enormously important to stand by young developers and support their research and development work. With the 'Hessen Ideen Stipendium' (Hessen Ideas Scholarship) and the 'Hessen Ideen' (Hessen Ideas) competition , we are motivating potential founders from universities to embark on the path to entrepreneurial independence and providing concrete support in the transition from an initial entrepreneurial idea to a convincing business concept. In total, we are funding the 'Hessen Ideen' initiative with around €2.9 million."

The Hessen Ideen Stipendium is aimed at knowledge-based start-up ideas from Hessen university students and alumni in an early phase. For a period of six months, the scholarship holders receive financial support. Depending on the person's status and university degree, a full-time scholarship of 2,000 euros per month or a part-time scholarship of 1,000 euros per month is paid. In addition, the selected start-up projects are supported in the development of their business idea as part of an accelerator program. Together with experts from the business world, the teams can work intensively on the further development of their business models. In addition, each team is accompanied by a personal start-up coach at the respective university and by the Hessen Ideen Team.

Within the framework of the scholarship program, the start-up ideas benefit not only from expert knowledge, but also from the exchange of ideas among themselves. The founding teams meet at regular intervals - virtually - and cross-fertilize each other in the development of their respective business concepts. The diversity of topics covered by the start-up ideas facilitates an interdisciplinary exchange of experience and brings great added value. In addition to ideas from the IT sector, sustainable material developments and a new concept from the agricultural industry will be supported in the next round of scholarships.

The following teams of founders from the University of Kassel will be funded:

"Turnkey" agroforestry systems.

Agriculture contributes to numerous environmental problems. These can be solved by integrating woody plants on agricultural land in the form of agroforestry systems. The team offers  one-stop farm-specific agroforestry system planning and implementation, as well as arranging external financing from non-agricultural stakeholders seeking a green investment.

The Hessen Ideas Scholarship is funded by the Hessian Ministry of Science and the Arts together with the Hessen Ideas Competition in the period 2017-2020. The overall Hessen Ideas initiative is under the patronage of Minister of State Angela Dorn. The program has been announced for the fifth time and is coordinated and implemented by the University of Kassel in cooperation with the Technical University of Darmstadt. The scholarship program runs until December 31, 2020, and a maximum of three people per founding team can receive funding. The founding of a corporation must not yet have taken place. In addition to the Hessen Ideen Stipendium, there has also been a statewide ideas competition for four years under the Hessen Ideen label, in which the best start-up ideas from all Hessen universities can participate.
