Measuring the Success of Knowledge Transfer - University of Kassel is a Pilot University

The University of Kassel is a pilot university in Germany for the quality assurance of knowledge transfer to society. This was announced by the Stifterverband today (Aug. 27). The university in northern Hesse will thus, among other things, further advance the transfer in the field of sustainability.

With the Transferbarometer program, the Stifterverband is establishing indicators for the first time to measure the effectiveness of the transfer of scientific knowledge to society. As one of three German universities, the University of Kassel is now receiving the opportunity to participate in the development of the instrument as a pilot university, as well as funding of 40,000 euros. In addition to the University of Kassel, RWTH Aachen and the University of Düsseldorf were selected from more than 70 applications, as were two universities of applied sciences and six Helmholtz centers.

Chancellor Dr. Oliver Fromm described the decision as "an award for the cooperation with the city and region to date." "But even more, it confirms that we are on the right track with our strategic measures. Instead of offering off-the-shelf services, as we do elsewhere, we want to work much more closely with our partners in the future to consider where science can contribute to the development of the city and region. In dialog, we want to develop formats, impulses, support options and go beyond the usual concepts with this design-oriented transfer approach."

An additional field of application for the transfer barometer arises from the future strengthening of the university's sustainability profile. Recently, the Senate had decided to establish a center for research on sustainable development at the suggestion of the Presidential Board. It is precisely for this purpose that the University of Kassel will develop and provide solution approaches for the national and international, but also for the regional level within the framework of the pilot project.

"Participation in the Transfer Barometer allows us to extensively review how our offerings and formats are working: through data collection, data analysis, experiments and much more," says Fromm. "An objective look helps us to keep getting better." The INCHER-Kassel Scientific Center will be involved in the development, testing and evaluation of the indicators, headed here by Prof. Dr. Guido Bünstorf.
