A place of learning for the digital age

Second part of the renovated campus library of the University of Kassel opened

After a renovation phase of more than three years, the second building section of the campus library at Holländischer Platz was opened for use today. With numerous new study spaces in bright and generously designed rooms, the UB once again visibly underlines its statement as a place of learning for quiet and concentrated work on campus.

In addition to the expanded range of individual workstations, students will find in the newly opened Building Section C the existing groups that had to move out of Building Section A for the upcoming renovation. These include Language and Literature (now in C/Level1) as well as Social Sciences and the Law and Business departments in C/Level0.

In line with Building Section B, which opened in 2017, the two levels C/0 and C/1 also form an overall quiet area. In the new room concept, the walking areas remain for the most part visually and acoustically separated from the learning spaces by long shelf axes. These are located throughout at the bright window areas and have views of the campus.

Fire protection, building ventilation and the acoustic concept were comprehensively modernized and adapted to the latest standards, as was already the case in building section B, and accessibility was ensured. The construction costs were financed by the HEUREKA program of the state of Hesse and implemented by the Landesbetrieb Bau und Liegenschaften Hessen (LBIH). The architectural firm blocher partners, Stuttgart, has been commissioned to design the interiors.

A date has not yet been set for the start of construction of the third and final renovation phase in building section A. Until that time comes, learning spaces will remain accessible here.

"We are very pleased about the completion of the second building section, which we have been waiting for a long time. The newly gained quality of stay, the transparency and brightness in the building, but also the improved guidance system identify us as a contemporary place of learning," comments the Senior Library Director, Dr. Axel Halle.
