The environmental and climate expert had been a member of the University Council of Kassel University since 2016. His term on the body runs until September 30, 2020, and Prof. Schneidewind has already announced that he will not seek another term in order to be able to focus on his new role in Wuppertal.

"Of course, we regret losing Prof. Schneidewind, a committed and extremely competent contact on the University Council - but at the same time we are pleased with him that he was able to realize his goal and was elected mayor," says Prof. Reiner Finkeldey, President of the University of Kassel. "We are sure that he will continue to follow the development of our university with interest from Wuppertal and thank him sincerely for his valuable work in the University Council."

Background

The University Council accompanies the university in its development, articulates the expectations that exist in the professional world and promotes the use of scientific knowledge and artistic achievements.

The University Council has a right of initiative on fundamental matters of the university and must approve development planning. It makes recommendations on course planning, evaluation procedures, target agreements, knowledge transfer, as well as on task-oriented and efficient administration and use of funds. It gives its opinion on the university's basic regulations, accountability reports, budget planning, the establishment and discontinuation of study programs, and the division of the university into departments.

The university council consists of up to ten members from the fields of business, professional practice and science and the arts. The members are appointed by the HMWK and half are nominated by the university and half by the ministry.
