In dialogue with urban society: "Research station for documenta and exhibition studies".

The building is based on a Bauhaus design: On August 13 and 14, the Transdisciplinary Research Center for Exhibition Studies (TRACES) of the University and the Kunsthochschule Kassel will present its inner-city research station. Students are constructing the house themselves, and in October it will be put into operation; citizens will be able to participate in research and teaching here.

Gabriele Heppe-Knoche (Head of the Evangelical Forum, Deputy City Dean, Evangelical City Church District Kassel for the property owner and cooperation partner); together with the participating students.

The building, which measures just under 100 square meters, is based on a design by Bauhaus teacher Ludwig Hilberseimer and will serve for five years at Kassel's Lutherplatz (centrally located between the city center and the university) to promote topic-related exchange between the university and urban society. At the same time, the site will serve as a workspace for students and teachers.

The basic body of the building had been erected by students of the University of Kassel in August 2019 in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Bauhaus in Dessau-Törten for one and a half years, on a plot for which the growing house by Ludwig Hilberseimer was originally designed. Now the house is moving to downtown Kassel, where thirty students of architecture, landscape architecture, product design and visual communication are rebuilding it in an expanded form and developing it further for its new function.

On the occasion of the construction of the research station, the visual communication students developed the visual appearance of TRACES. In designing the logo, Yannick Stark, Lotte Frank and Julia Reinhold express interaction and the shared experience of science as the core message of TRACES. "The lines of movement that come together to form the lettering tell the story of different people coming from different directions and meeting on their way. They experience part of the journey together, then separate again, and in the end their traces add up to TRACES."

The building project of the University and Academy of Art Kassel was led by Prof. Philipp Oswalt, Dr. Andreas Buss (Department of Architectural Theory and Design), Prof. Jakob Gebert (Product Design) and Samson Kirschning (Visual Communication). It was substantially supported by the Evangelischer Stadtkirchenkreis Kassel, the IKEA Foundation, the Pfeiffer Foundation and the sto Foundation.

The public is cordially invited to the pre-opening and open house:

Pre-opening on August 13 at 5:00 pm at Lutherplatz (access next to Mauerstraße 11), 34117 Kassel with Prof. Dr. René Matzdorf (Vice President of the University of Kassel), Prof. Dr. Alexis Joachimides (Executive Director TRACES). City Dean Dr. Michael Glöckner (Evangelischer Stadtkirchenkreis Kassel, for the property owner and cooperation partner), Prof. Philipp Oswalt, (Department of Architectural Theory and Design).

At 18:00 follows a round of talks "Places of urban society - A conversation with initiator:s" with Marie Kersting (Dokfest), Gerrit Retterath (neighborhood art project "Hier im Quartier/Kulturzentrum Schlachthof"), Malene Saalmann (Trafo-Haus); N.N. (Tokonoma), moderated by Prof. Dr. Heinz Bude.

On Saturday, August 14 from 12:00 - 17:00, the nearly completed research station will also be open for viewing during an open house.

TRACES will launch the research station at the end of October 2021. Planned events include pop-up exhibitions, talks, lectures, workshops, seminars, and more.
