Public lecture series "Brown Bag Lectures" starts on 03 November

In eight Brown Bag Lectures on the occasion of the anniversary "50 Years University of Kassel" young researchers of the University of Kassel present their topics. The series of events in the historic ambience of the Gießhaus on the campus at Holländischer Platz will take place from November to February, always on Wednesdays at 12 noon.

Food has an impact on the world. For example, because we can use it to reduce or increase our climate footprint. Eva Weingärtner from the Department of Environmental and Behavioral Economics is investigating whether this knowledge influences our decisions: Are we more likely to reach for more sustainably produced or healthier foods under the observation of others, just for a positive image, to present ourselves in a better light? Weingärtner will present the results of her research on this topic in a Brown Bag Lecture.

The idea for the series of events comes from the U.S.: There, some scientific institutions also use regular breaks to provide information. Food and drinks are served in an informal atmosphere, typically packaged in a brown paper bag. At the University of Kassel, Nicole Raddatz from the Department of Integrated Transportation Planning | Mobility Development opens the Brown Bag Lectures with an outlook on how smartphones can improve citizen participation in transportation planning in the future. Marissa Reiserer and Natalie Schneider also want to go out into the world with their scientific results: "We want to create a lecture that is fun to listen to and that gets across how enthusiastic we are about our research topic," says Reiserer. These two young scientists are also driven by a socially relevant topic: the transportation revolution. More specifically, the question of how local public transport can better arm itself against pandemics in the future. This new research project, called EMILIA, is headed by Prof. Dr. Carsten Sommer from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Other lecturers come from theology, the university library, linguistics and sociology.

At the same time, as the name suggests, there will be catering. Those who wish can purchase a brown bag in advance at the Pavillon Café, filled by the Studierendenwerk with a delicious sandwich and a sweet. Eva Weingärtner, who conducts research on food, believes this event format is important in the exchange between science and the public: "Especially in the area of nutrition, it's essential, because many people underestimate how important nutrition is in our individual climate balance."

General hygiene and spacing rules apply at the Brown Bag Lectures, which are based on the current regulations of the state of Hesse. Currently, Kassel is subject to the 3 G rule (vaccinated, recovered, tested).
