Environmental footprints for buildings: Kassel founding team wins prize

In the sixth Hessen Ideas Competition, Gerrit Herder, Dilan Glanz and Husam Sameer from the University of Kassel won third place and 2,500 euros for their start-up idea "SURAP". The name stands for Sustainable Resource Application - a tool for assessing the climate impact and resource efficiency of buildings over their entire life cycle.

Based on the digital building data, "SURAP" quantifies and visualizes the environmental footprints at the building material, component and building level. This enables planners, even without expertise in life cycle assessment, to analyze and optimize the environmental impact of buildings in the various planning, design and execution phases in real time in the digital model. The ecological analysis of building projects will become an increasingly important standard in building assessment in the future. With its idea and entrepreneurial implementation, the "SURAP" team can set trend-setting standards for the real estate market, according to the jury.

The idea and the first prototype of the "Sustainable Resource Application" were developed during Dr.-Ing. Husam Sameer's doctoral studies at the Center for Environmental Systems Research (CESR). As doctoral supervisor, Prof. Dr. Bringezu, Executive Director of CESR and Professor of Sustainable Resource Management, now continues to accompany the start-up project as a mentor.

Since February 1,  2021, the founding team has been supported by funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy as part of the EXIST start-up grant. The teams are supported by UNIKAT, the start-up consultancy of the University of Kassel. UNIKAT accompanies young scientists, employees, students and alumni with a wide range of support services in the phase from idea generation to foundation.

The "Hessen Ideen" competition for university start-up ideas was held for the sixth time this year; 32 teams from 13 universities took part. "Hessen Ideen" is aimed at university members with an affinity for start-ups who are still in the early stages of developing their idea for a company. The projects were evaluated by experts, while users voted online for their favorite idea. In this way, twelve business ideas reached the finals and were presented to a jury, which decided on the winners.
