EXIST grant for playful climate protection project climactivity

A playful approach to climate protection: The founding team climactivity has developed an online game that raises awareness of climate protection in everyday life. It links personal behavior and activities in everyday life with information about climate balances, for example. For this innovative concept, the three-member team received an EXIST grant from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy to establish a gGmbH.

The majority of people in Germany consider the topic of climate protection to be important, but at the same time it is very difficult to change habitual lifestyles. This is where the climactivity team comes in with its program, which consists of three components: The climactivity app guides users to the points where particularly much can be done for climate protection and then encourages them to set personal goals in each of these areas. In addition, users can network in their own climactivity social network in their region, join together in joint actions, record their personal climate footprints and share successes with others. These two offerings are complemented by an on-site event model that is highly scalable due to its analog-digital layout. Currently, team participation in the program is being prepared.

Since November 2021, the innovative business concept of climactivity gGmbH is funded by the EXIST grant of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy with a total of 140,000 euros for scholarships, material resources and coaching for twelve months. Prof. Dr. Heike Wetzel, Head of the Department of Microeconomics and Empirical Energy Economics, accompanies the founding team as a mentor. For Wetzel, this is already the second EXIST team she has supported as a mentor. climactivity had already received initial funding through successful crowdfunding campaigns, especially for the programming of the app and the social network.

The EXIST Start-Up Grant supports scientists, students and alumni interested in founding a company in developing a business idea and implementing the business concept. Funding is provided for innovative, technology-oriented or knowledge-based product ideas with significant unique selling points and good prospects of economic success. The UNIKAT start-up consultancy supports the application and accompanies the teams during the implementation of their idea. For interested parties, the start-up consultancy offers an open ZOOM consultation hour every Friday between 10 and 12 o'clock. Outside of this time, consulting appointments can be made.
