University surveys students and employees on mobility

The university has commissioned the Department of Transportation Planning and Systems of renowned expert Prof. Dr.-Ing. Carsten Sommer with this project.

"With around 24,000 students, the University of Kassel is the largest university in northern Hesse and one of the city's most important employers with around 3,300 staff," Chancellor Dr. Oliver Fromm explained in a cover letter to students. "We generate a lot of traffic and want to ensure that the traffic of students, staff and visitors is more efficient, environmentally and socially compatible and thus more sustainable." Over the next few years, therefore, the university plans to improve transport services at its campuses, for example with high-quality bicycle parking facilities where bicycles can be parked safely and protected from the rain.  

However, "in order to develop sustainable transport, an up-to-date and reliable data basis is absolutely essential," explains Prof. Sommer. The first wave of the student survey will start on June 20, 2022, followed by the second wave of the student survey and the staff survey this fall.

"For a holistic picture of the situation, we need the highest possible participation," Sommer appeals. "Every response matters, because the more meaningful the results, the better the demands and wishes of all university members can be taken into account in planning. By participating in the survey, students and employees are making an important contribution to the sustainable development of our university." Of course, the applicable data protection regulations would be observed.

Participation is simple: all students have already received a message to their university mailbox with further information. The invitation link for the survey will then also be distributed in the same way from June 17.
