International teacher training - Delegation from Israel visits Kassel

Students and teachers from the Israeli colleges Kibbutzim and Sakhin will be guests at the University of Kassel in early June. The visit with a student conference and a comprehensive educational program is the highlight of the project "Online Educational Initiatives" of student teachers and master students from Kassel together with Jewish and Arab students from Israel. The host is the Department of Foreign Language Teaching and Learning Research & Intercultural Communication.

Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Claudia Finkbeiner, an English professor from Kassel, the students have been working in virtual seminars since March in international teams on case studies, designing educational projects and developing websites with educational content. Through this "distance learning," the prospective teachers acquire intercultural and linguistic competencies in addition to subject didactic skills and learn how to use new media and teaching formats in the classroom. At the beginning of June 2022, the participating students will meet "face to face" for the first time: Eleven Jewish students from Kibbutzim College in Tel Aviv (the largest teacher training college and a driving force with regard to digitization in Israel) and four students from the Arab Sakhnin College as well as three lecturers will be guests at the University of Kassel. On June 7, they will present their websites on educational ideas developed in the groups at a student conference. During their stay, they will visit, for example, the Karlsaue and Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, various schools in the city of Kassel and, together with students from the Fairy Tale Seminar, go on an excursion to the GrimmHeimat Nordhessen.

The German-Israeli university project has existed since 2013 and promotes digitization, internationalization, and cultural awareness among student teachers in teacher training. In 2019, the "Online Educational Initiatives" project won second prize in the working group category at the Hessian University Award for Excellence in Teaching, which is endowed with 30,000 euros. 800 students have already gone through the cooperation, which has been in place since 2013. In 2020 and 2021, the "Online Educational Initiatives" project took place exclusively digitally due to the Corona pandemic.
