Symposium: Fine Mobility as a Building Block for the Traffic Turnaround

Every car journey has a green alternative - this is the thesis of the Kassel research project "Mobility with a human touch - fine mobility for environmental and climate protection, urban and quality of life". The research is now being taken further in a three-day symposium.

Menschliches Maß statt Gigantomanie - Rückblick Kasseler Symposium Feinmobilität, 26-28 September 2022

The project at the Department of Transportation Planning and Systems, headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Carsten Sommer, aims to define and establish the term "fine mobility" as an important component of the transportation turnaround. Existing and upcoming vehicle concepts such as micromobiles, bicycles, velomobiles, cabin scooters and minicars are analyzed as an alternative to the conventional motor vehicle, which is becoming ever larger and heavier.

Launched in May, a symposium will now be held Sept. 26-28 with more than 60 experts. They come from the manufacturing and development of fine mobility vehicles, relevant industries and associations, research, traffic law, infrastructure planning and the communications industry.

The symposium consists of discussion rounds on individual topic blocks, in which experts contribute statements. It will be framed by introductory words from Kassel City Councilor Christof Nolda and Dr. Maike Schäfer, Bremen Senator for Climate Protection, Environment, Mobility, Urban Development and Housing. The event will conclude with a panel discussion on the opportunities and obstacles for fine mobility.

The research project will run until October 2023 and is funded by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt with just under €125,000. In addition to the University of Kassel, the creative studio "The Urban Idea GmbH" from Freiburg is participating.
