Lecture Series: "Climate Change and Raw Materials: Risk or Opportunity?"

The joint research project "Commodity Extractivism in Latin America and the Maghreb" invites you to a lecture series in Kassel and Marburg in the current winter semester. The first lecture will take place on Thursday, October 27, at 6 p.m. Prof. Dr. Hans-Jürgen Burchardt (University of Kassel) will talk about "500 Years of Interdependence between Latin America and Europe.

The lecture series, entitled "Climate Change and Raw Materials: Risk or Opportunity?", is being organized by the University of Kassel and the Philipps University of Marburg. It brings together scientists from various departments and universities in Germany. Raw materials have a direct impact on the lives and incomes of over a quarter of the world's population. Without raw materials, the current world would be inconceivable. But raw materials exploitation also destroys nature and increases global warming. Dependence on raw materials brings further problems. This is not only evident in crises within commodity-exporting countries, but is also expressed in the current geopolitical situation, such as the Ukraine war.

The public lecture series approaches these problems and examines the issues from the perspective of Latin America and the Maghreb. The contributions focus on the relationship between commodities and climate change from empirical, regional and/or theoretical perspectives. They are linked by not only analyzing the risks of the relationship between commodities and climate change, but also illuminating possibilities and opportunities. The research project "Commodity Extractivism in Latin America and the Maghreb" is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The first lecture with Prof. Dr. Hans-Jürgen Burchardt, titled "500 Years of Interdependence between Latin America and Europe," will take place on Thursday, October 27, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Conference Room B in the Science Park (Universitätsplatz 12) at the University of Kassel.
