Green facades

The plantings are part of the project "Climate adaptation measures for sustainable open space management" (01.10.2021 - 31.12.2025), which is funded by the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art. The Department of Landscaping, Landscape Management and Vegetation Development (Department 06) and the university's Green Office are involved in the project. Next year, further measures such as tree planting and unsealing are planned, including at the North Campus and at the School of Art.

The facades that have now been planted on the building of the Operations Technology Department in Georg-Forster-Strasse, on the Drittmittelhaus (Mönchebergstrasse) and on the Engineering III building are particularly suitable for the measure, as they face south and are exposed to direct sunlight.

Depending on the shape of the wall, broad-, narrow- or low-growing varieties are used for planting. In general, these are so-called soil-bound solutions, in which the plants are placed in existing planting strips and, in contrast to non-soil-bound solutions (tubs or planting bags), do not need to be fertilized and watered after the growing phase. In addition to shading the facades and cooling the surrounding air through transpiration from the plants, safe breeding and roosting sites are created, as well as a food supply for birds.  This is the recommendation of a conservation assessment commissioned by the Department of Landscaping, Landscape Management and Vegetation Development.
