Recognize and act: Day of action on sexualized discrimination and violence

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Campus Center, Lecture Hall 3, Moritzstr. 18. Registration is open until March 6, indicating the workshop, at gleichstellung[at]uni-kassel[dot]de.

"The goal of the event is to sensitize staff:in as well as students to discrimination, sexual harassment and violence, to carry out prevention and educational work and to offer help to all members of the university in the event of assault," says Dr. Sylke Ernst, head of the Equal Opportunity Office.

First, Claudia Schredl, research associate at GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, will present the latest results of the largest survey on gender-based violence in academia in Europe (UniSAFE study). The presentation will be simultaneously translated into English.

After the lecture, six parallel workshops will be held on sexualized discrimination and violence, as well as on the basics and possibilities for action with regard to dealing with sexualized violence. A taster course on self-assertion and self-defense for women and non-binary persons will also be offered at the day of action. The workshop "Breaking the Silence - Guideline for protection against discrimination and sexualized violence" will be held in English.

"Discrimination, sexualized harassment and violence will not be tolerated at the University of Kassel," said Prof. Dr. Sonja Buckel, vice president of the University of Kassel. "However, not everyone is always aware of what exactly is meant by this and what options there are at the university to get help and take action against it. This is where the Action Day comes in, because it combines the transfer of knowledge about effective intervention and prevention measures with practical workshops and shows individual possibilities for action."

The event marks the conclusion of the university-wide campaign "STOP THE SILENCE!" Events and workshops have been held under this slogan since Nov. 25, 2022, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The Equal Opportunity Office invites employees and students of the University of Kassel to the event "Sexualized Discrimination and Violence at the University of Kassel - Recognize and Act" on March 8, 2023.
