9-euro ticket: survey provides insights into public transport

A year ago, researchers from the Institute of Transportation at the University of Kassel investigated the extent to which the 9-euro ticket is used and by whom. The key finding was that those who use public transportation frequently evaluate it differently - especially in terms of which criteria are considered relevant for the evaluation. Now there is a follow-up survey on the Deutschlandticket.

Inspired by the introduction of the 9-euro ticket in summer 2022, a team from the Department of Cycling and Local Mobility, including Marie Klosterkamp, Paul Papendieck and Prof. Dr. Angela Francke, analyzed attitudes toward public transport. On the one hand, the subjective experience of a public transport trip, including comfort, relaxation and privacy, was surveyed. On the other hand, the focus was on the functionality and practical usability of public transport in terms of flexibility, time savings and costs as a means of transport. The frequency of use was recorded on the basis of subscriptions.

The results show that regular users have a more positive attitude towards public transport than occasional users. The main finding is that this difference is particularly evident in the area of practical usability. The research team therefore recommends a greater emphasis on flexibility, time savings, and cost-effective services to encourage increased use of public transportation.

These findings led to the development of a follow-up survey focusing on the Deutschlandticket. The Deutschlandticket represents a new option aimed primarily at easy and flexible use of public transportation. However, the pricing of 49 euros per month raises the question of whether the Deutschlandticket is also perceived as an attractively priced alternative to other means of transportation. To clarify this question as well as the general opinion on the Deutschlandticket and its use, the research team is now conducting another nationwide survey.

The survey can be accessed until 31.10.2023 at the following link: www.uni-kassel.de/go/deutschlandticket.
