Children on bikes: First BiciBus runs in Kassel

There are several advantages to cycling to school every day: lots of exercise, fresh air and it's environmentally friendly. In large cities, however, there are also risks for schoolchildren on bikes in the early morning rush hour. Children in particular can easily be overlooked by inattentive road users. A group of students at the University of Kassel now want to change this and have therefore launched Kassel's first BiciBus.

The BiciBus (Spanish for bicycle bus) takes a whole group of children on bicycles together - this increases visibility and therefore the safety of the individual children. It follows a previously agreed route and stops at fixed stops so that other children can join them. The group is supervised by accompanying adults.

"The first ride was very well received. Around 50 participants joined the first BiciBus today, 30 of whom were children. All the children arrived safely and on time for the start of school at the Reformschule Kassel and also had a lot of fun on the trip. We very much hope that the BiciBus will become established at other schools in Kassel in the future," says Jerome Busch, a student at the University of Kassel and one of the initiators of the BiciBus Kassel.

Background:

The BiciBus is organized by Cycassel, a cooperation of students and citizens of the city, which emerged from a seminar at the University of Kassel. The aim of Cycassel is to spread the joy of cycling. To this end, they are organizing the Kassel Cycling Week with more than 30 projects, which will take place from 8 to 14 April.
