CampusCard now also valid as student ID and semester ticket

With the start of the 2019/20 winter semester, the University of Kassel will be issuing student IDs and the AStA semester ticket in the form of a chip card. The previous paper-based IDs will thus be replaced.

The ID cards will be integrated on the CampusCard, which has already been available to students and employees for several years. The CampusCard already allows cashless payment for various services on campus; these include the dining halls and cafeterias of the Studierendenwerk Kassel as well as the devices for printing and copying. The card continues to serve as a library card and can be activated for building access with the electronic locking system.

With the addition of the student ID card and the semester ticket, the CampusCard becomes an even more useful tool. Students at the University of Kassel are pleased that handling the ID cards has become much easier because the card is more compact and robust than the previous paper version. "At the request of many fellow students, the conversion project was taken up together with the university and our cooperation partners. We are pleased that we can meet this desire for change and present the now much more practical form of the ticket," says mobility officer and chairman of the AStA Tobias Marczykowski. On the university's side, there are benefits from administrative simplifications as well as from saving the approximately 25,000 pages of special paper that were used each semester for the ID cards. "This is another step in the digitization of our administrative processes," said Dr. Oliver Fromm, the university's chancellor, with pleasure. "At the same time, it is also a contribution to remaining attractive as a university for the digital generation; young people expect such an offer from their university."

Since the start of the allocation of study places for the 2019/20 winter semester, the CampusCard has been issued as part of the enrollment process in an automated process; an application is no longer necessary for this. Newly enrolled students conveniently receive the card by mail. To increase the level of security, newly issued cards include a photo of the holder.

Students can update their CampusCard ID cards on their own each semester after re-registration: Self-service terminals are available for this purpose at all university locations. In just a few seconds, the corresponding validity dates are written on the card. The card balance can also be topped up at special machines.

Through the integration of the ID cards, the CampusCard continues to develop into an indispensable companion through everyday study.
