Construction industry sponsorship award for outstanding master's theses

Kassel master's students in civil engineering Jens Fischer and Timo Stanzel received this year's North Hesse Construction Industry Sponsorship Award. The prize is endowed with 1,500 euros each. The award ceremony took place yesterday, Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at 5:30 pm in the Gießhaus of the University of Kassel. The prize is sponsored by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Stufenausbildung (Bau) Kassel - ASK.

In his master's thesis, Jens Fischer investigates the load-bearing behavior of multi-storey timber structures. This type of construction has been increasingly used in the recent past and may play a role in the future, especially with regard to effects from earthquakes.

Timo Stanzel's master's thesis deals with the comprehensive amendment of German building law in the German Civil Code. By means of an online survey of building contractors as well as architecture and engineering firms, he determined where there is a need for clarification within the industry.

The results of both award winners were very convincing and valuable, judged the jury. The work combines scientific ambition with direct practical relevance in an outstanding way and demonstrates in an exemplary manner the close link between university research and teaching. They also show that the profession of civil engineering has a high social relevance due to its importance for the achievement of current construction and environmental policy goals.

The award is presented annually in cooperation with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Kassel to students of the department for outstanding final theses. The selection criterion is that the work to be honored makes a contribution to solving significant problems in engineering practice, taking into account cost-effective planning, design and construction.

The North Hesse Construction Industry Award continues the tradition of the KBB Award, which was first presented 31 years ago. Thus, it is the longest existing sponsorship award for student theses at the University of Kassel.

The evening will be moderated by Prof. Bernhard Middendorf as Dean of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The award will be presented by the two ASK board members Dr. Burkhard Siebert and Thilko Gerke. The keynote speech will be given by Jochen Ludewig, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Hessian Engineering Associations, on the topic of "Engineers as the backbone and engine of today's and tomorrow's society".

Jens Fischer's master's thesis was supervised by Prof. Werner Seim (Department of Building Conservation and Timber Construction) and Prof. Ekkehard Fehling (Department of Solid Construction). After completing his master's degree, Jens Fischer is currently working as a structural engineer in an engineering firm in Austria.

Timo Stanzel's master's thesis was supervised by Prof. Volkhard Franz (Department of Construction Organization and Construction Methods) and Prof. Peter Racky (Department of Construction Management). After completing his master's degree, Timo Stanzel is currently employed as a site manager at a construction company operating in Hesse.
