Global value chain - once everyone at the table

People from all over the world are involved in the supply chain for cars and food. However, their interests are different. Conditions are not always fair for everyone. The International Kassel Summer Academy (IKSA) of the University of Kassel and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation offers a special concept to bring all stakeholders to the table.

The International Kassel Summer Academy is about the question of how globalization can be shaped fairly.

From June 14 to 19, 2020, the ICSA will bring together entrepreneurs, trade unionists, students, political activists and interested parties from all over the world. Under the motto "Shaping Globalization Fairly," participants will discuss the global economic and political challenges of the financial and trade order as well as human rights in the seminars. Applications to participate are open until April 1.

"Countries in the North are still economically dominant. But the political and economic decisions made by countries and companies are not necessarily fair to the countries in the global South," says Prof. Dr. Christoph Scherrer, head of the Department of Globalization and Politics at the University of Kassel. That's why the Summer Academy asks, among other things, how small farmers can be better involved or how better conditions for workers can be created.

This year, a special focus will be on the impact of the planned supply chain law of the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. German companies that produce abroad are to be held accountable for better working conditions locally.

Around 15 people are expected to attend from countries in South America, Africa and Asia. In Germany there are 7 places for which interested trade unionists, works councils, political activists or students can apply.

The IKSA will take place at the Evangelical Academy Hofgeismar in the Schönburg Castle.

The application

The event will be held entirely in English. However, average to good English skills are sufficient for participation. Applications must be submitted online by April 1, 2020. There are no participation fees. The costs for accommodation, meals, teaching materials and travel to/from the conference venue will be covered by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.
