Kassel student wins EUROGUSS talent award

In die casting, the University of Kassel is among the international leaders. Bachelor's graduate Marvin Emde proved this in early January in Nuremberg: He won the first talent competition at EUROGUSS, an international trade show for die casting.

The competition was open to all bachelor's and master's graduates worldwide who had considered innovations, improvements or new applications in die casting, including the entire value chain, in their work. Marvin Emde from the University of Kassel won the talent competition with his bachelor's thesis in foundry technology, beating off strong national and international competition with participants from Spain, India, Mexico and Turkey, among others.

The topic of his thesis is "Potential for die cast components through wall thickness optimization". In it, Emde developed a seat armrest as a die cast component, demonstrating potential for new applications in die casting. The newly developed armrest is significantly lighter than the models commonly used to date and at the same time can withstand twice the load compared with the standards under consideration. A final manufacturing simulation showed possibilities for actual production.

Emde received first prize for his presentation at the EUROGUSS trade fair in Nuremberg. As a prize, in addition to a tablet computer, there is also the opportunity to present his work in Guadalajara (Mexico), Chennai (India) or Shanghai (China). Department head Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Fehlbier as well as supervisor of Emde's work Dipl.-Ing. Adam Peter Fros were very pleased about this achievement.
