"Parties in the woods with loads of plastic confetti are a nuisance".

Hannah Hartmann and Philip Weyer have developed environmentally friendly confetti.

"Cologne Carnival without confetti cannons? Hardly imaginable. And even at many a wedding or party, the colorful little snippets set the mood. However, common confetti is not environmentally friendly. Especially the glittery versions cause a lot of plastic waste. This inspired us to come up with a business idea. Our seed confetti is not only beautiful to look at, but also biodegradable. And what's more, the colorful mix contains wild plant seeds, helping to spread native seeds.

The idea for the environmentally friendly confetti came about in our shared workspace at the Kassel Art Academy. We were talking about parties in the forest, where vast amounts of confetti ended up as trash in nature. For us, this was a nuisance, because nature conservation is a matter close to our hearts. So we looked for an alternative. Our solution: confetti made from a starch mixture and natural dyes, which contains seeds of regional plant species - for example hawkweed, daisies, field thyme and heather carnation. All of them are so-called light germinators, which germinate on the surface of the soil when damp. This means that something is left behind at every open-air event, which ultimately also benefits species conservation. After all, plants are food and home for wild bees and insects, which in turn play an important role in the ecological balance.

Many people support our business idea, and we are very grateful for that. Prof. Martin Schmitz helped us with the concept and a fellow student installed vending machines where we could sell our seed confetti. In addition, the creative minds at Raamwerk, among others, helped us with networking. At the university's UNIKAT ideas competition, we won the audience award for our compostable confetti. A great recognition that has motivated us to continue.

Our idea is well received. This is shown by the feedback we receive from customers. Again and again, we receive photos of plants that have been created from our confetti. We have also had inquiries from companies wanting to order larger quantities of our confetti. But at the moment this is not yet feasible. We manufacture our product by hand, so our possibilities are limited. However, that is set to change soon. We would like to outsource production, and talks are already underway with a workshop in Mainz. In addition, we are always on the lookout for sponsors to accompany us on our journey."
