Project for digital planning and control of construction site logistics in large-scale plant construction

The research project "BIMLog - BIM-based logistics planning and control in large-scale plant construction" is a collaboration between the Department of Production Organization and Factory Planning at the University of Kassel and the Chair of Computer Science in Civil Engineering at the Ruhr University Bochum. The project is funded as IGF project 19720 N by the German Logistics Association (BVL) via the Alliance of Industrial Research (AiF) within the framework of the program for the promotion of joint industrial research (IGF) by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) based on a resolution of the German Bundestag. The duration of this research project is from July 2018 to November 2019.

The provision of digital logistics models for planning and controlling construction site logistics for the on-site assembly of large-scale plants is absolutely essential for efficient project execution, but has so far only taken place to a limited extent. The reasons for this are the lack of information technology support and the high manual effort required to create the digital logistics models.

The aim of the project is therefore to support logistics planning and control on the construction site by means of digital methods, taking into account project-specific boundary conditions for plant construction, which is dominated by SMEs. In this way, the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) carrying out the work can be provided with novel tools for efficient construction site organization to ensure efficient and high-quality construction of the plant on site. Existing models based on Building Information Modeling (BIM) are to be prepared in such a way that they can be used for planning the logistics processes.

In order to extend BIM models with logistics descriptions and to convert them into concrete logistics models under the respective environmental conditions, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sigrid Wenzel from the University of Kassel and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Markus König from the Ruhr University Bochum (Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering) have been working together with their teams in the "BIMLog" research project since July 2018: https://www.inf.bi.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/index.php?option=com_staff&id=101&lang=en. The planned research results include concepts for the formalization of product-specific logistics requirements based on project-specific boundary conditions, methods for the semi-automatic generation of logistics models for the analysis and planning of construction site logistics, and visualization and adaptation concepts for the use of the models and control of the processes on the construction site. The developed methods will be evaluated on the basis of a demonstrator so that their applicability can be implemented in a target-oriented manner after the end of the project. Within the scope of the research project, final theses are offered at the Department of Production Organization and Factory Planning (FB15). Topics that have already been worked out can be found at https://www.uni-kassel.de/maschinenbau/?id=37954. The research team is supported by a project advisory committee made up of industry representatives to examine the results with regard to their applicability in practice. The innovation of the planned solutions lies in digital project- and product-specific logistics models for plant construction that can be used by SMEs, so that SMEs can strengthen their competitiveness through high quality, efficient processes and the best possible cooperation between all players on the construction site. The first meeting of the project support committee will take place on 09.11.2018 in Kassel.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sigrid Wenzel has been head of the Department of Production Organization and Factory Planning at the University of Kassel's Faculty of Mechanical Engineering since 2004 and is also deputy managing director of the Institute of Production Engineering and Logistics.
