Conference "INFORMATIK 2019" at the University of Kassel

The Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI) celebrates its 50th anniversary at the conference "INFORMATIK 2019" at the University of Kassel. The GI is the largest professional society for computer science in the German-speaking world. The guiding theme of the conference is "50 Years of the Society for Informatics - Informatics for Society". It will take place from September 23 - 26 at the Campus Center of the University of Kassel.

"Digitization is fundamentally changing our lives, and many citizens see digitization not just as an opportunity, but as a risk, even a threat," says Professor Kurt Geihs. He heads the "Distributed Systems" chair at the University of Kassel. "We are very pleased to host the conference, especially in the anniversary year of the Gesellschaft für Informatik," Geihs continues.

The conference is not only aimed at scientists and experts, but is deliberately opening up to the general public. "We have been able to attract several high-profile speakers whose presentations will take a look at current discussions surrounding digitization," Geihs reports.

For example, Bernhard Schölkopf from the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen will give a talk on "Causal Learning and Artificial Intelligence," in which he will address the role of machine learning and the industrialization of information processing.

Siobhán Clarke from Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) will give a talk on "Smart Cities," discussing how cities of the future can be made livable with the help of digitization. Both lectures will be held in English.

Volker Claus (University of Stuttgart), Stefan Jähnichen (TU Berlin) and Reinhard Wilhelm (Saarland University) will take a look at the present and future of the Gesellschaft für Informatik and give a joint talk on "GI 50 - and what's next?"

The extent to which computer science can help provide a better basis for policy decisions will be highlighted by Ciro Catutto of the ISI Foundation (Turin) in his talk "Data Science for Social Good: Opportunities and Challenges."

Other components of the conference include workshops, the Business - Science Dialogue including a company exhibition, presentations on the art of informatics, and two festive evening events at the Alte Brüderkirche and the Orangerie.

INFORMATIK 2019 will be held together with the partner conferences Environmental Informatics (EnviroInfo 2019), Artificial Intelligence (AI 2019) and the student conference SKILL 2019. The conference fee is "all inclusive" and includes access to all presentations and sessions.
