Tropical greenhouse awarded for special commitment

Every two years, the prize of €3,000 is awarded jointly by Bread for the World and the Catholic Fund to three (out of more than 2,000) selected projects or initiatives in the categories "Global learning in schools", "Church partnership work" and "Political education projects". The award ceremony will take place on June 21, 2019, during the German Protestant Kirchentag in Dortmund. The winners of the two categories "Church Partnership Work" and "Political Education Projects" are the Catholic Church Parish of St. Georg and Konzeptwerk Neue Ökonomie.

The president of Bread for the World, Cornelia Füllkrug-Weitzel, was part of the selection jury. She says: "WeltGarten is an example of how dealing with global justice can become an integral part of school profiles and how a civil society actor with the support of church funding can become a sought-after partner for the state school system."

Under the name "WeltGarten Witzenhausen", six different partners have been cooperating for 17 years, all of them active in development education work:

-     Bildung trifft Entwicklung - Regionale Bildungsstelle Nord, Göttingen
-     Deutsches Institut für tropische und subtropische Landwirtschaft (DITSL GmbH) Witzenhausen
-     Tropical Greenhouse of the University of Kassel, Witzenhausen
-     Didactics of Political Education, University of Kassel
-     Center for Ecumenism / Protestant Church in Hesse and Nassau and Protestant Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck

The experiences and educational offers flow together in educational events for all age groups. These mainly take place at three extracurricular learning locations in Witzenhausen: the tropical greenhouse, the world store and the ethnographic collection. The offers are based on the Orientation Framework for Global Development Education (Kultusministerkonferenz and Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development) and the current curricula and educational plans. The program includes exciting modules on topics such as sustainability, organic farming, biodiversity, rainforests, fair trade, consumption and lifestyles.

Each year, more than 1,200 schoolchildren, students, teachers and other multipliers take part in the offerings. Particularly important to the Bildungszentrum WeltGarten are the continuous development of content and methods and the ongoing contact and exchange with school stakeholders at various levels.
