Coffee seminar "From the red-brown gold - discover the world of coffee".

From Friday, October 19, 4:30 p.m. to Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 5:30 p.m., everything in the Tropical Greenhouse will revolve around coffee: we Germans drink about 100 liters of beer and a good 140 liters of water per capita and year. Do you know how many liters of coffee we drink?  Germany is a coffee country, with over 160 liters per capita - so who is surprised that coffee is one of the most important commodities on the world market? From the bush to the cup of coffee, about 25 million people worldwide depend on coffee as farmers, plantation owners, cooperatives, traders, importers and exporters, brokers and refiners.

On Friday starting at 5 p.m. , there will be a colorful mix of old stories and current facts about coffee, the journey goes from Ethiopia to coffee to go in cities around the world! How our favorite hot beverage is produced and which way the beans take from the plantation to our cups, we will experience practically in the evening at the coffee course: You will discover the fruits on the coffee plants in the tropical greenhouse, sort and transport green coffee, negotiate the price at the stock exchange and roast beans for "your" personal ecologically produced and fairly traded coffee. Then hopefully enjoy this roast "hot as fire, black as night and sweet as love" as the perfect infusion!

On Saturday, we'll start with a tour of the tropical greenhouse - covering ecological aspects of coffee cultivation, farming systems, climate change, and virtual water. For example, "The Climate Institute" from Australia warns in an August 2016 study that by 2050, climate change could reduce the potential acreage for coffee cultivation to half its current level.

During a visit to the non-profit roasting plant Röstwerk in Witzenhausenwe will experience a roasting process, enjoy coffee and learn about special features of this local roastery.

In the afternoon, Kleber Cruz Garcia from the Fair Trade Company Gepa will deliver an exciting field report from the practice of coffee trading. He will report on what is important behind the scenes in fair trade, what consequences price developments on the stock exchange or climate changes have for both the growers and the trade.

After theory and discussion, a sensory highlight awaits us in the form of a tasting of various fair trade coffees.  Kleber Cruz Garcia will let us taste the different types of coffee and coffees from different growing regions. Small coffee treats -also cultural- for all senses we will experience and enjoy on the sidelines.

The seminar is a cooperation of Weltläden in Hessen e.V., Tropengewächshaus Witzenhausen/Universität Kassel and WeltGarten Witzenhausen.
