Public lecture series on the "refugee crisis" as a field of right-wing populist mobilization

Since 2012, a lecture series on right-wing currents has been held every winter semester at the University of Kassel. This year's series of events takes up two topics that are currently in the focus of public debate: on the one hand, the 'refugee crisis', and on the other hand, the strengthening of right-wing populist movements in Europe.

Under the title "The 'Refugee Crisis' as a Field of Right-Wing Populist Mobilization", a public lecture and discussion event will be held every Thursday from October 20, 2016 to February 10, 2017, starting at 6:15 p.m. in Lecture Hall 6 of the Campus Center (Moritzstraße 18).

In the lecture series, the phenomena 'refugee crisis' and 'right-wing populism' will be examined from various social and cultural science perspectives in order to further discuss how the 'refugee crisis' became the central mobilization field of right-wing populist agitation. The Vice President of the University of Kassel, Prof. Dr. Ute Clement, as well as representatives of the participating departments will open the lecture series with greetings on Thursday, October 20, 2016.

This opening session will initially be followed by two sessions in which the basic terms will be clarified: On October 27, Prof. Dr. Karin Priester from the University of Münster will answer the question: "What is right-wing populism?" On November 3, Matti Traußneck from the University of Marburg will discuss to what extent one can speak of a 'refugee crisis'. In the further course of the semester, different perspectives on the refugee crisis and right-wing populism will be presented. Not only representatives of different cultural and social science disciplines, but also practitioners from the field of refugee work as well as refugees themselves will have their say.

In addition to the University's Presidential Board, the event is supported by the General Students' Committee (AStA) and the Departments of Humanities, Humanities and Cultural Studies, and Social Sciences at the University of Kassel.

Time: Thursdays from 6:15 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.

Location: Lecture Hall 6, Campus Center, Moritzstraße 18
