Life cycle assessment software for the construction industry

The idea behind the Sustainable Resource Application (SURAP) is to be able to evaluate building projects ecologically over their entire life cycle. Even before a building is constructed, it is clear how many resources it will consume and how it will impact the climate.

SURAP is intended to be inserted as a plug-in into the digital building model of Building Information Modeling applications and can also be used by non-professionals. Added to this is the visualization of the material, water and climate footprints of the respective building project. In this way, SURAP is intended to set the course for resource- and climate-friendly construction in both practice and research.

One of the founders of SURAP is Husam Sameer, who completed his doctorate under Prof. Dr. Stefan Bringezu at the University of Kassel. In his doctoral thesis, he created the scientific basis for SURAP. He is supported by Dilan Glanz, a graduate of the master's program in environmental engineering. She dedicated her master's thesis to the method and application of life cycle assessment of buildings and construction products. They are joined by Gerrit Christoph Herder, who is studying sustainable management in the master's program.

Since February 01, 2021, the three-member founding team has been supported with funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy totaling 141,600 euros.

EXIST is a funding program of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Its goal is to improve the start-up climate at universities and non-university research institutions. It also aims to increase the number and success of technology-oriented and knowledge-based start-ups. To date, the EXIST funding program has already supported around 50 projects at the University of Kassel  .

The teams are supported by UNIKAT, the start-up consultancy of the University of Kassel. UNIKAT accompanies young scientists, employees, students and alumni of the University of Kassel with a wide range of support services in the phase from idea generation to start-up.
