Gold for rowing team of the University of Kassel at DHM

Two gold and one silver for the Kassel University rowing team. This is the result of the German University Championships (DHM) in ergometer rowing on April 10. This year, the event was held completely virtually for the first time.

The first Kassel boat in the mixed four competed with Paul Schütz, Saeed Hadjizadeh, Julia Hädrich and Samira Boddin in the same constellation as last year. Also in 2021 they dominated the 500m race over the complete distance and defended their title. For reasons of hygiene, it was not possible to hold a relay over 2000m on an Ergo. The second Kassel boat with Timo Baierl, Stephanie Thomas and the two rowing newcomers Philipp Hahn and Melanie Gräfe reached the 5th place. Following this, Simon Nowak secured a respectable seventh place in the men's lightweight single sculls race over 1000m.

This was followed by a race of the men's fours also over 1000m. Until halfway through the race, the Kassel boat with Paul Schütz, Jonas Bosold, Felix Mühlhausen and Simon Nowak was still in bronze place. However, they then managed to pass the Bremen JU team. Nevertheless, they were still more than a boat length behind WG Münster 250 meters before the finish. They set them up for the final sprint and won by a blink of an eye.

The last race with Kassel participation was the mixed eight in the 350m sprint. This year Paul Schütz, Saeed Hadjizadeh, Julia Hädrich, Stephanie Thomas, Felix Mühlhausen, Jonas Bosold, Melanie Gräfe and Samira Boddin started for the University of Kassel and made up one place compared to last year by taking silver this time.

The preparations for this year's races were much different than what we were used to in previous years. Due to the renewed lockdown, all training had to be discontinued from the beginning of November 2020. However, the rowing team did not let this get them down and switched to online training for the second time. Under the guidance of Alexander Sander, the athletes were challenged with digital interval training using their own body weight and many an everyday object as a training weight.

Participation in general university sports is also possible under pandemic conditions. The courses take place exclusively digitally. Interested students can find the current course offerings here: https://www.uni-kassel.de/einrichtung/hochschulsport/kursprogramm
