Intelligently networking electromobility

The research project "unIT-e² - Reallabor für verNETZte E-Mobilität" is investigating how electromobility can be optimally integrated into the power grid. In order to approach the complex topic from all sides at the same time, the University of Kassel is participating in the joint project together with 28 other partners from the automotive and energy industries, IT and charging infrastructure, and science.

The aim of the project is to demonstrate interoperable solutions for the holistically optimized integration of electric mobility (e-mobility) into the energy system. In addition to further technical and IT development, which forms the basis for the mass application of e-mobility, the question of user acceptance is of paramount importance. In this context, both the development of individual preferences and the design of legal framework conditions play a decisive role.

The departments of Microeconomics and Empirical Energy Economics (Prof. Dr. Heike Wetzel), Fundamentals of Law, Private Law and Economics of Civil Law (Prof. Dr. Georg von Wangenheim) and Technology and Innovation Management anyway Entrepreneurship (Prof. Dr. Patrick Spieth) at the University of Kassel are therefore investigating user behavior in the context of e-mobility use in general and charging behavior in particular. In particular, the University of Kassel is accompanying one of the four Germany-wide field trials in which previously developed use cases are demonstrated in practice.

With a combination of conceptual design, field experiments and representative empirical analyses, the aforementioned disciplines are investigating incentive concepts to influence charging behavior, adoption processes and contract design. The project results thus contribute to the design of tariffs and products of the practice partners, but also to the further development of the current legal framework.

The project has already started on August 1, 2021 and is funded for three years by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) with more than 30 million euros as part of the Elektro-Mobil funding program.
