There are legitimate reasons to prevent public access to a dissertation for a certain time after 'publication' (so-called "embargo" or "blocking notice"). These can be outstanding article publications/ongoing reviews, patent application or other, especially legal, hurdles. In such cases, the University Library will initially refrain from publication upon request with reference to § 16 para. 9 of the General Regulations for Doctoral Studies at the University of Kassel of 2021.

The informal application must be signed by both the doctoral candidate and the supervisor. The application must be submitted to the University Library and is initially limited to a maximum of 2 years (from the date of the disputation). An extension for another year is possible, but requires the approval of the doctoral committee.

If the publication is to be made publicly accessible earlier than requested, an informal notification to the Dissertation Office of the Kassel University Library is sufficient.

The title page may not contain the logo of the University of Kassel . The logo of the Faculty, Institute and/or project in which the dissertation was written may be used with the explicit permission of the responsible body.

Even in the case of collaborative doctorates, the logo of the partner university should generally not be included on the title page.

According to § 16 para. 5 of the General Regulations for Doctoral Studies at the University of Kassel, the doctoral certificate may exceptionally be handed over upon presentation of a publishing contract from a recognized specialized publisher.

The informal application for approval is to be submitted to the doctoral office of the University of Kassel together with the corresponding publishing contract and the supplementary sheet "Publication information for advanced receipt of the doctoral degree" (only available in German language). The office forwards the application to the responsible doctoral committee for a decision and issues the doctoral certificate if the decision is positive.

The delivery of the deposit copies in the doctoral office has to take place within a period of 2 years (from the date of the defense).

The doctoral procedure is only successfully completed when the deposit copies have been submitted.

You can either hand in print copies of the dissertation in person at the University Library at Holländischer Platz or alternatively send them in:

Kassel University Library, Dissertation Office, Diagonale 10, 34127 Kassel, Germany.

As soon as you have provided proof of publication, the dissertation office of Kassel University Library will check whether all requirements have been met.

If the proof of publication is complete, the doctoral office will be informed. You will also be informed of this by e-mail.

The doctoral office will now issue the certificate, which you can pick up by appointment or which will be sent to you by mail.
