Introduction and start of studies

This course starts in the winter semester.
Dates for the start of the course in October 2024 will be published in August 2024.
Until then, you can get an impression of last year's courses.

The most important dates and offers for the start of studies

At the University of Kassel there is not the an introductory event. Rather, there is an extensive offer of different "Veranstalter:innen":

  • On the one hand, the departments offer an official program. This type of introductory event is about the subject of study: What is this subject thematically about? Which majors are offered in Kassel? Which professors and subject areas determine the content? So: by all means attend and ask questions!
  • For some (not all) courses and subjects we recommend participation in preliminary courses. Pre-courses are aimed at first-year students who would like to refresh their knowledge in certain subjects. The preliminary courses start before the introduction dates.
  • Often the student councils also offer introductory courses. The student council is part of the student self-organization and deals with the specific questions of the students of a department. In terms of content, it deals with questions about the course of studies, the organization of the curriculum, the organization of learning and examinations. The student councils thus offer help with the question of how best to study this subject.
  • In addition, there are "welcome events": First semester welcome, offers for students with children, offers for international students.

  • Which courses can and should I attend in the first semester?
  • What are seminars? What is the difference between a propaedeutic course, lecture, seminar or tutorial?
  • How do I create my timetable?
  • What are module examination regulations?
  • How do I find my way around the campus? Where can I find my seminar room, lecture hall, library or cafeteria?
  • How do I get access to online seminars?
  • How do I log into the university's W-Lan? How do I configure my university mailbox?
  • What do I have to do in lectures, seminars and tutorials? What are study and examination achievements?

In addition, the orientation tutorials give you the opportunity to get to know the university and the city of Kassel together with other first-year students. Experience shows: Friendships made during the orientation days often last a whole (study) life. The orientation tutorials start with the welcome by the Dean Prof. Ruffing on 09.10.23 at 10.00 am in the Campus Center - Lecture Hall 5!

We look forward to meeting you!

We would like to welcome you to the Institute of Romance Studies at the University of Kassel and would like to provide you with important information in advance on behalf of the Spanish language practice.
In order to be admitted to study Spanish at the Institute of Romance Studies at the University of Kassel, you must provide proof of Spanish language proficiency at level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
However, in order to be able to study successfully, it is important that you develop your language skills quickly after starting your studies so that you can easily use Spanish at level B1, both to successfully complete the individual modules of language practice and to participate in the courses of the specialist sciences. We support you in this with special language practice courses, which are known as propaedeutic courses and are taught exclusively by native speakers. Within the first winter semester, you will reach level B1 through a combination of block courses and regular weekly sessions. You can see the exact structure of this course below.
If you can already demonstrate level B1, it is possible to attend the courses of the first module of language practice directly. If you have an even higher language level, please take the placement test scheduled immediately before the start of the semester ( 16.10.2024 /14:00 - 16:00, Kurt-Wolter-Str. 5, Room 0020) in order to find a suitable entry point into the language practice modules.
