General information

Prerequisites for a Cotutelle procedure:

The doctoral candidate has been accepted for doctoral studies at both universities or has initiated the acceptance procedure at both universities. A stay at both university locations is desired. A Cotutelle procedure is not recommended if a longer stay at a foreign university is planned or an external / international reviewer is favoured. For the binational doctural procedure an individual agreement (= cooperation agreement) is concluded.

In a Cotutelle procedure, the following processes in particular run binationally:

  • The supervision of the dissertation: At each university, the doctoral candidate has at least one permanent supervisor.
  • Writing a dissertation, which is submitted in both universities.
  • Awarding of the doctoral degree.
  • Working stays at both universities.
  • Participation of external supervisors in the review and examination process.
  • Composition of a joint doctoral committee consisting of members from both universities (and, if applicable, additional external members).
  • The issuance of a joint doctoral certificate from both universities (or two certificates that refer to each other).
