After his studies of pharmaceutics 1989-1994 at Philipps-University in Marburg and his licensure 1995, Carsten Culmsee has done his doctorate in 1997 on the topic „Induction of growing factors through beta2-mimetics clenbuterol – the new principle of neuroprotection“ at Faculty of Pharmaceutics of the Institute for Pharmacology and Toxicology. He completed his postdoctoral phase firstly in Marburg and secondly as a DFG-Postdoctoral Fellow in „Sanders Brown Research Center on Aging and Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology“ at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky in USA. After that he first headed back to Marburg and starting from 2003 was a junior research group leader at Faculty of Pharmaceutics of Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. After his postdoctoral lecture qualification dissertation (Habilitation) in 2004 on the topic „Inhibition of neural apoptosis and activation of endogenous protective mechanisms through pharmaceuticals“ he has been researching and lecturing as a private lecturer in Munich until he got appointment for Professorship of Clinical Pharmaceutics at Faculty of Phamaceutics of Philipps-University in 2007. The research focus of his working group at the Institute of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmaceutics embrace pharmacological aspects of mitochondrial functions, especially during neurodegenerative processes as well as clinical aspects of safety of drug therapy and evidence-based self-medication. He is Vice Dean of Faculty of Phamaceutics and deputy director of the Marburg Center for Mind, Brain and Behavior.
