In addition to tree planting and unsealing, building facades are to be planted with climbing plants. The first facades, such as the large south-facing walls of the plant technology building in Georg-Forster-Strasse, were already planted with wild vines on Friday, December 2, 2022, together with committed students. Depending on the shape of the wall, wide-, narrow- or low-growing varieties were used. In general, these are so-called soil-bound solutions, where the plants are placed in already existing planting strips and, in contrast to non-soil-bound solutions (tubs or planting bags), do not need to be fertilized and watered after the growing phase. The HNA accompanied the action and reported on this on 05.12.2022. Prof. Stefan Körner, head of the FG Landscaping and Vegetation Development, will carry out further greening, which should contribute to a better climate on campus and counteract hot spells. In addition to shading the facades and cooling the surrounding air, through the transpiration of the plants, safe breeding and roosting places as well as a food supply for birds will be created, thus fulfilling a recommendation of the conservation expert opinion commissioned by the Department of Landscape Construction, Landscape Management and Vegetation Development.
